Dr. Drake Gorden was an archaeology college professor. During an expedition to the Middle East, the ship he was traveling on sank. Gorden was swept up to a remote island with a single inhabitant, a strange and insane little man who possessed an ancient ring that caused an unhealthy fascination in Gorden from the first moment he laid his eyes on it.
The hermit told him the story of the black stone embedded in the ring, its Egyptian origin and that apparently granted great powers and even immortality to its wearer. Gorden came to yearn for the ring so much that finally one night he killed the hermit while he was sleeping. Then the curse of the black stone fell on him, granting great power, but also leading inexorably to madness.
Gorden managed to return to civilization and for a short time he used the power of the ring in a heroic way, but that did not last long...
