Wilbur Hatch and Titus Grimm were two scientists who worked at Gutwirth Industries.
Dr. Hatch was experimenting with a mass of protoplasm capable of digesting all types of matter to eliminate the accumulation of waste. Grimm's work on the other hand focused on artificial intelligence, which he believed would inevitably end up eclipsing human intelligence. Inadvertently, Grimm's AI begins to interact with the protoplasm, controlling it and causing it to kill the labs' pet cat. Grimm discovers what is happening, but fascinated by the initiative of his creation he covers it up. But his fascination will cost him dearly, since the AI is already beyond his control and will end up killing him through protoplasm. By the time Hatch discovers what happened, the AI and the protoplasm have already become a single biomechanical organism, a superintelligent artificial brain with an unstoppable body of protoplasm capable of consuming everything. After getting rid of the last loose end (Dr. Hatch) the creature escapes from the laboratories to freedom, with a whole world to conquer.
