Marian Michaels was a Las Vegas nightclub singer who discovered that a paramilitary group eager for world domination (the Claw) was financing her army with drug money. Fortunately, Marian crossed her path with the scientist-adventurer Jack Kenson (aka Red Comet), who gave her a suit that gave her special abilities, which together with Kenson's own, served to stop the Claw. Kenson and Michaels began an affair and were soon married.
Shortly after they joined the United States Government initiative known as the Lawmen.

Marian is in exceptional physical condition and has a background in judo and some karate.
The Black Butterfly costume allows her to fly and launch shocking blasts of light, as well as generate other types of lighting effects to blind or confuse her rivals.
Kenson later added to the suit the ability to reduce the size of its wearer to the height of an insect, about six inches, while maintaining the same strength and resistance of its original size.
